Formation

When the reporting verb (dijo que, comentó que...) is in the past, the reported tense usually shifts back one step, just like in English.

Tense backshift

 Direct speechReported speech
Present"Trabajo mucho."Dijo que trabajaba mucho.
Preterite"Comí paella."Dijo que había comido paella.
Future"Vendré mañana."Dijo que vendría al día siguiente.
Imperative"¡Ven aquí!"Dijo que fuera allí.

Reporting statements

Use decir que + a shifted tense. Present becomes imperfect, preterite becomes pluperfect, and future becomes conditional.

  • Ella dice: "Estoy cansada." → Ella dijo que estaba cansada. She says: "I'm tired." → She said (that) she was tired.
  • Él dice: "Llegué tarde." → Él dijo que había llegado tarde. He says: "I arrived late." → He said (that) he had arrived late.

Reporting questions

For yes/no questions, use preguntar si; for questions with a question word, keep that word (qué, cuándo, dónde...). No question marks or inversion are used in the reported version.

  • "¿Vienes a la fiesta?" → Me preguntó si venía a la fiesta. "Are you coming to the party?" → She asked me if I was coming to the party.
  • "¿Dónde vives?" → Me preguntó dónde vivía. "Where do you live?" → She asked me where I lived.

Reporting commands

Commands are reported with decir que + subjunctive (usually the imperfect subjunctive at this level, but que + present subjunctive is common and acceptable in everyday speech).

  • "Cierra la puerta." → Me dijo que cerrara la puerta. "Close the door." → He told me to close the door.

Pronouns and time expressions also change

When you report speech, adjust pronouns to match the new speaker's perspective, and shift time/place expressions the way English does (yesterday → the day before).

  • hoy → ese día today → that day
  • mañana → al día siguiente tomorrow → the next day
  • ayer → el día anterior yesterday → the day before
  • aquí → allí here → there

Lo que dijo el profesor

El lunes, el profesor nos dijo: "Mañana habrá un examen sobre el subjuntivo. Estudien esta noche y traigan un diccionario."

Cuando llegué a casa, le conté a mi madre lo que había dicho. Le dije que el profesor había dicho que al día siguiente habría un examen sobre el subjuntivo, que estudiáramos esa noche y que trajéramos un diccionario.

Mi madre me preguntó si ya había empezado a estudiar. Le contesté que no, pero que lo haría enseguida.
