Preterite vs. Imperfect
Choosing the right past tense
Spanish has two simple past tenses. Learn when to use the preterite for completed actions and the imperfect for background, habits, and ongoing states.
Formation
Regular endings shown for -AR, -ER and -IR verbs. Many common verbs are irregular in the preterite (fui, hice, tuve, pude, dije, vine, quise, puse, supe, estuve) — irregular imperfects exist only for ser, ir and ver.
Preterite (regular)
| hablar | comer | vivir | |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | hablé | comí | viví |
| tú | hablaste | comiste | viviste |
| él / ella / usted | habló | comió | vivió |
| nosotros | hablamos | comimos | vivimos |
| vosotros | hablasteis | comisteis | vivisteis |
| ellos / ustedes | hablaron | comieron | vivieron |
Imperfect (regular)
| hablar | comer | vivir | |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | hablaba | comía | vivía |
| tú | hablabas | comías | vivías |
| él / ella / usted | hablaba | comía | vivía |
| nosotros | hablábamos | comíamos | vivíamos |
| vosotros | hablabais | comíais | vivíais |
| ellos / ustedes | hablaban | comían | vivían |
The preterite: completed actions
Use the preterite for actions that started and finished at a specific point in the past, or for a sequence of completed events. Think of it as a photograph — a single, finished moment.
- Ayer fui al cine con mi hermana. Yesterday I went to the cinema with my sister.
- Comimos en un restaurante nuevo el sábado. We ate at a new restaurant on Saturday.
- La película empezó a las ocho y terminó a las diez. The film started at eight and finished at ten.
The imperfect: background and habits
Use the imperfect for ongoing states, descriptions (age, time, weather, feelings), and habitual or repeated actions in the past — 'used to' actions. Think of it as a video playing in the background.
- Cuando era niño, jugaba al fútbol todos los días. When I was a child, I used to play football every day.
- Eran las tres de la tarde y llovía mucho. It was three in the afternoon and it was raining a lot.
- Mientras yo cocinaba, mi madre ponía la mesa. While I was cooking, my mother was setting the table.
Using both together
The two tenses often appear in the same sentence: the imperfect sets the scene, and the preterite is the action that interrupts it.
- Yo dormía cuando sonó el teléfono. I was sleeping when the phone rang.
- Hacía sol cuando salimos de casa. It was sunny when we left the house.
Verbs that change meaning
A few common verbs — conocer, saber, poder, querer, tener — translate differently depending on which past tense you use.
- Conocí a Marta en la universidad. I met Marta at university. (preterite = first meeting)
- Conocía a Marta desde hacía años. I already knew Marta for years. (imperfect = ongoing state)
- No quise ir a la fiesta. I refused to go to the party. (preterite = a decision)
- No quería ir a la fiesta, pero fui. I didn't want to go to the party, but I went. (imperfect = a feeling)
