The Simple Future Tense

Learn the simple future (hablaré, comerás, vivirá) for predictions, promises and probability, and how it differs from ir a + infinitive for near-future plans.
Formation
Add these endings directly to the infinitive. The same twelve irregular stems used in the conditional apply here too (tendr-, podr-, dir-, har-, saldr-, vendr-, pondr-, sabr-, querr-, habr-).

Predictions
Use the simple future to predict things you're fairly confident about but that are further off or less certain than an immediate plan.
- Mañana lloverá en el norte del país. Tomorrow it will rain in the north of the country.
- En el futuro, todos trabajaremos desde casa. In the future, we will all work from home.
Promises and formal plans
The simple future is often used for promises and commitments.
- Te llamaré en cuanto llegue. I'll call you as soon as I arrive.
- No te preocupes, lo terminaré a tiempo. Don't worry, I'll finish it on time.
Probability and conjecture
Spanish uses the future tense to guess or wonder about the present — something English does with 'must be' or 'I wonder'.
- ¿Qué hora será? I wonder what time it is.
- Estará cansado después de ese viaje tan largo. He's probably tired after that long trip.
Simple future vs. ir a + infinitive
Ir a + infinitive is used for near, decided plans (like English 'going to'); the simple future is more common for predictions, promises, and things further in the future or less certain.
- Voy a estudiar esta noche. I'm going to study tonight. (a fixed, near plan)
- Algún día estudiaré medicina. Someday I will study medicine. (a distant, less certain prediction)
El horóscopo de la semana
Esta semana traerá buenas noticias en el trabajo. Alguien te ofrecerá una oportunidad interesante, pero tendrás que decidir rápido. No será fácil, pero si confías en ti mismo, todo saldrá bien.
En el amor, las estrellas dicen que conocerás a alguien especial si sales más de casa. Los solteros tendrán suerte este fin de semana.
Cuidado con la salud: dormirás poco si no organizas mejor tu tiempo. Recuerda que el descanso también será importante para tu energía.
