The Conditional Tense
Hypotheticals, wishes and polite requests
The conditional is Spanish's equivalent of 'would' — used for hypothetical situations, polite requests, giving advice, and talking about the future from a past viewpoint.
Formation
Add these endings directly to the infinitive — the endings are the same for -AR, -ER and -IR verbs. Verbs with an irregular future stem (tendr-, podr-, dir-, har-, saldr-, vendr-, pondr-, sabr-, querr-) use the same irregular stem in the conditional.

Hypothetical situations
Use the conditional to talk about what would happen in an imagined scenario.
- En tu lugar, yo hablaría con ella. In your place, I would talk to her.
- Con más tiempo, viajaríamos por toda Sudamérica. With more time, we would travel all over South America.
Polite requests and suggestions
The conditional softens requests and advice, making them sound more polite — very common with gustar, poder and deber.
- Me gustaría reservar una mesa para dos. I would like to reserve a table for two.
- ¿Podrías ayudarme con esto? Could you help me with this?
- Deberías descansar más. You should rest more.
Future-in-the-past
When reporting what someone said about the future, the conditional replaces the future tense — this connects directly to reported speech.
- Dijo que vendría a la reunión. She said (that) she would come to the meeting.
- Pensábamos que ganarían el partido. We thought (that) they would win the match.

— ¿Qué harías si te tocara la lotería? — preguntó Ana.
— Pues, primero viajaría por Asia durante un año — contestó Luis—. Después, compraría una casa pequeña cerca del mar y ayudaría a mi familia. ¿Y tú?
— Yo dejaría mi trabajo y estudiaría fotografía. Me encantaría vivir de eso. También me gustaría abrir un pequeño café con mis amigos.
— Deberíamos empezar a comprar más lotería, entonces — se rió Luis.
